This is the catalogue for Xu Bing’s exhibition, entitled ‘Language Lost’, at the Massachusetts College of Art in 1995. ‘Language Lost’ focuses entirely on text and interpretation, and according to Ann Wilson Lloyd (one of the contributors in this catalogue), it is perhaps Xu Bing’s most complexly layered work since it combines elements of past pieces such as paper sutras, square words calligraphy, computer printouts, and the orchestration of living animals. The silkworms and their natural behaviours ― moved across and laid eggs over the printed pages, and encase the text with spinnings ― suggest interpretations such as text coming alive and nature gradually obliterates all traces of human culture. This publication provides a photographic documentary of the exhibition which also includes Xu Bing’s much acclaimed work: ‘A Book from the Sky’. With artist biography and selected bibliography.
