'This book provides a comprehensive examination of Zhong Biao's life and work, with the focus on his works created for the Venice Projects in 2012 and 2013. Zhong Biao, born 1968, is one of the few Chinese artists who are able to capture most aspects of China's breakneck changes through his hyperrealist visual imaginations and his unique cosmology that finds traceable movements in chaos. Contingencies and inevitabilities constitute Zhong Biao's universe of myriad imageries, which he relies on to critique or comment on everything from ubiquitous consumerism, China's suffocating political atmosphere, Hong Kong's handover, the Beijing Olympics, to ecological disasters. His immensely rich images are reflective of China's realities, but they also go beyond the immediate reality and into the infinite universe and deep historical times, which he calls "unreality." From palimpsests to hyperrealist juxtapositions, from concrete images to abstraction, Zhong Biao uses his energy and creativity to document China in rapid transformation. His work is simultaneously personal and public, aesthetic and political; his young age and his innovative spirit signal more marvelous images for years to come.' - from back cover
