Photologue | Bangkok Updates

In late August I visited Bangkok to work with our researcher, Narawan Pathomvat. The Archive is in the process of digitizing two collections of material from Thailand, namely Womanifesto and the Visual Dhamma Gallery. Established by Alfred Pawlin in 1981, the Visual Dhamma Gallery witnessed the fast changing contemporary art scenes of the 1980s and 1990s in Thailand. Womanifesto, a bi-annual, artist-initiated event focusing on the work of women artists has developed steadily since it first started in 1995.

I also spent two days attending the Arthub Summit entitled ‘The Making of the New Silk Roads’. The symposium, spearheaded by Davide Quadrio, Defne Ayas and Ark Fongsmut, was Arthub Asia’s first international programme in Bangkok. It took on a format of performative symposium – the exhibition space at the Bangkok University Gallery was transformed into a classroom and over twenty five presentations, lecture-performances and performances were packed into two and a half days.
