Photologue | Seven Days in the Art World of Shanghai

This ‘seven-days in the Shanghai art world’ definitely did not tap into every aspect of the contemporary art world, nor were there as many art-lovers wearing Prada at the SH Contemporary Art Fair or any auctions as described in Sarah Thorton’s Seven Days in the Art World. However, it was a seven-days spent capturing the current status of the Chinese contemporary art world from young artists collectives such as Double Flies to the established Wu Shanzhuan; from commercial gallery solo exhibitions and the SH Contemporary Art Fair to the Songjiang exhibition curated by the not-for-profit organization, BizArt; from the Minsheng Museum inauguration to the historical respective of contemporary art in Shanghai curated by Biljana Ciric, as well as the eArt festival, bringing together international media artists in the heart of Shanghai in the run up to the next World Expo – all of which offer glimpses, if not a comprehensive understanding, of Chinese contemporary art happening here and now. This set of photographs definitely does not do justice to the seven-days spent in China’s largest metropolis.
