Photologue | A Change of the Guard

Manila, May 2008

Manila's museums are finally making space for contemporary art. Recent exhibitions at four major venues around the capital signal a welcome change. The National Art Gallery's Contemporary Art Projects was launched last May with the exhibition 'Room 307: Inkling, Gutfeel & Hunch'. Across the street at the Museum of the Filipino People, two contemporary photography exhibitions, 'Counter-Photography' and 'Swarm in the Aperture', were presented by the Japan Foundation. The Lopez Museum and the UP Jorge B. Vargas Museum have also commissioned artists Jonathan Olazo and Alwin Reamillo to create new projects, both ongoing until later this year. Here’s hoping that the wave can be sustained.
