Photologue | Now Jump, NJP Festival, Nam June Paik Art Center

An independent curator based in New York recently complained about the stagnant atmosphere of the art scene in the Big Apple following the economic crisis, but was stunned that Korea seemed to be removed from the crisis when it came to the art field. Indeed, in Seoul, beginning in September, numerous big events were scheduled until late October. Among them was Nam June Paik Art Center’s inaugural biennial exhibition, inviting 103 artists from 19 countries. The exhibition was steered by three curators – Youngchul Lee (Korea, director), Tobias Berger (Germany, chief curator), and Claudia Pestana (Portugal, assistant curator) – and organized by GyeongGi Cultural Foundation and Yongin-si. Berger’s appointment to the Nam June Paik Art Center is the first such appointment of a foreign chief curator at a public art museum, and the art center is full of upbeat plans including curatorial workshop programs, an international symposium, performances, publishing an English journal, and even a NJP Art Center Award for young artists in the media art field.
