Photologue | Two Biennials in Korea

Gwangju Biennale; Busan Biennale
5 September–9 November; 6 September–15 November 2008

The 7th Gwangju Biennale opened on 5 September as scheduled despite the turmoil created by Shin Jeong-ah, the former co-director of Gwangju Biennale 2008, who shocked Korea Society last year with her fraudulent educational credentials and collusion with politicians.

Along with Okwui Enwezor, the sole artistic director, two curators and five ‘position papers’ curators instead participated. Under the title ‘Annual Report: A year in Exhibitions’, diverse activities and practices in the international contemporary art scene of 2007 and 2008 were introduced without any particular theme.

On the following day, the second largest harbour city in Korea initiated the 5th Busan Biennale with the title, ‘Expenditure’. Wonbang Kim, Seung-bo Jeon (independent curator), and Jeong-hyung Lee (sculptor) took charge of ‘Contemporary Art Exhibition’, ‘Sea Art Festival’, and ‘Busan Sculpture Project’, respectively.
