Asia Art Archive (AAA) and Arts Initiative Tokyo (AIT) host a roundtable discussion on alternative art education. With dramatic changes mirroring the social dynamism of Hong Kong and Tokyo's art ecologies in the past two decades, AAA and AIT reflect on their roles as independent organisations that create and share knowledge with diverse communities.

AAA and AIT have been building learning platforms through innovative programming to supplement and support mainstream art education. In 2009, AAA began its Learning & Participation (L&P) Programme in response to the lack of resources for learning about contemporary art in the region—offering programmes and learning materials for educators and young adults, not only professionals in the field, to engage with AAA’s Collection and recent art in Asia. Since 2001, AIT has been operating MAD (Making Art Different), a pioneering contemporary art school with no formal affiliations to institutional educational establishments. Its goal has been to stimulate and deepen interest in contemporary art through lectures and programming on a diverse array of topics.

AAA and AIT bring art and education practitioners together to reflect on the impact of alternative art education by independent organisations and practitioners today. At the same time, the roundtable discussion will re-examine the history of alternative art education in both cities, reflecting on present practices and imagining future possibilities.

In conjunction with the roundtable, on Wednesday, 25 July, AIT will organise a public talk with Shimada Yoshiko, “Alternative Art Education for Social Changes in Japan and Hong Kong,” based on her ongoing research and residency with AAA. Susanna Chung, AAA Programmes Manager and Head of Learning & Participation, will also speak about AAA’s educational programmes initiatives.

Asia Art Archive

Asia Art Archive (AAA) is an independent non-profit organisation initiated in 2000 in response to the urgent need to document and make accessible the multiple recent histories of art in the region. With one of the most valuable collections of material on art freely available from its website and onsite library, AAA builds tools and communities to collectively expand knowledge through research, residency, and educational programmes.

Through its Learning & Participation Programme, AAA offers various activities and educational resources throughout the year, with hopes to develop a sustainable and meaningful engagement with its Collection and recent art in Asia.

Arts Initiative Tokyo

Arts Initiative Tokyo (AIT) is a non-profit arts organisation based in Tokyo, Japan. Its ethos involves nurturing radical, bottom-up programmes to disseminate and encourage art in new ways for broad audiences. To achieve this, AIT organises independent education programmes, residency programmes, and curatorial/consultancy projects with partnering businesses. Through its history and practice, AIT positions itself as a vital alternative centre for the arts in Japan, working with local contexts to consider global issues and perspectives.

This roundtable is by invitation only. Interested cultural and art education institutions and practitioners, please contact learn@aaa.org.hk by Wednesday, 18 July 2018.
