The Fragments that Resist the Story

Aslı Çavuşoğlu (b. 1982, Istanbul) examines the way in which cultural and historical facts are transformed, represented, and interpreted by individuals. Working across various media, Çavuşoğlu assumes the role of an interpreter, writer or facilitator in her projects in order to highlight the precarious and subjective nature of our shared histories, questioning those who frame these experiences. She will discuss the use of backward construction in her practice by chronicling the history of a murder, of art, or of a nation through some of her recent works, including 191/205 (2009), a seven-minute sound work inspired by the 1985 governmental censorship on public broadcast in Turkey; In Diverse Estimations Little Moscow (2011), a film that examines the idea of collective memories through the study of a military incident; and The Stone Speaks(2013), an installation that explores the potential of archaeological artifacts deemed inept by authorities to form narrative.

She has recently exhibited at Arter, Istanbul (2013); Delfina Foundation, London (2013); Gallery NON (2013); MAK Museum, Vienna (2013); Frieze Projects, London (2012); Art Museums of Bergen Permanenten, Bergen (2012); 11th Baltic Triennial of International Art, Vilnius (2012); and Performa11, New York (2011). Aslı Çavuşoğlu is presently artist-in-residence at Spring Workshop.
