The proliferation of contemporary arts organisations—from small artist-run spaces to major institutions emerging across the region—raises questions about how their organisational records, photographs, videos, and ephemera can be captured, preserved, and made accessible. Some arts spaces last for a short period of time which adds to the urgency of capturing an organisation's memory, while others build large collections of documentation without a process for organising or accessing them.

In 2019, the first phase of the Ha Bik Chuen Archive Project will come to an end. How this project will be documented is the starting point for a three-day symposium and workshop jointly organised by Asia Art Archive and M+ on the building of institutional archives. With speakers from the Getty, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), AAA, M+, IVAA, and SALT, the workshop aims to be a forum for arts organisations to discuss ways to manage their organisational records and create institutional archives.

The workshop will take place on 23 and 24 May, and attendance is by invite only. There will be a workshop on using the open source archives information management application ArchivesSpace on 25 May.
