Digital Interface as Creative Space

The pandemic has led to an increased reliance on e-learning, requiring educators to develop a new set of skills in order to teach effectively. Other than the one-way transmission of knowledge in the form of an online lecture, are there more dynamic approaches for online education? How can digital screen space be re-invented? How might educators more effectively engage learners within this space?

AAA invites artist and puppeteer Anurupa Roy to conduct an online workshop for educators in Hong Kong, exploring interactive ways to facilitate digital learning. Amidst the pandemic, she has been examining ways to turn the digital interface into a creative space to engage learners. Anurupa Roy will share her extensive experience with both teachers and students, and discuss art as an experiential way of learning as well as a space for expression.

In this workshop, Anurupa will guide participants to carry out a series of hands-on activities, which can be conducted online with students, such as visual reading, storytelling, and puppet theatre exercises. There will also be a group discussion session for participants to share their experience around distance education.

This workshop is  part of the Teaching Labs series, AAA’s teacher professional development programme. It is designed for teachers and pre-service teachers in Hong Kong. Artist-educators and museum educators in Hong Kong and other regions are also welcome. A certificate will be given to participants upon request as proof of Teacher Continuing Professional Development.

Anurupa Roy is a puppeteer, puppet designer, and puppet theatre director based in New Delhi. She has directed numerous shows for children and adults, from the Ramayana and Mahabharata to Shakespearean comedy and the Humayun-Nama. With her theatre company Katkatha, she participated in numerous festivals across Europe, East Asia, and South Asia. She was a recipient of the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar in Puppetry in 2006. She was previously a visiting faculty at the University of California Los Angeles and an artist-in-residence at Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Council.

The AAA Learning and Participation Programme is supported by the S. H. Ho Foundation Limited and C. K. and Kay Ho Foundation.
