Hong Kong Conversations 2024: Ordinary Perceptions invites audiences to explore AAA’s newly launched archives, the Pak Sheung Chuen Archive: Sunday Mingpao and the Siu King Chung Archive. Their cultural and historical records show how the “ordinary” was perceived and used as a source of creative inspiration in artworks, exhibitions, and socially engaged happenings. This event fosters a discussion on the connection between Hong Kong art and the public.
The talks are part of AAA’s two-year project Recalling Disappearance: Hong Kong Contemporary Art, which fosters creative, scholarly, curatorial, and educational endeavours related to Hong Kong art with a focus on creating and sharing archives.
Free and open to the public with registration.
This event will be conducted in Cantonese, with English simultaneous interpretation provided. Please register separately for each talk.
The Newspaper Column as Art Domain
Thu, 5 Dec 2024
6:30–8pm
The first talk brings together Sunday Mingpao editor Helen Lai with artist Tozer Pak Sheung Chuen and AAA Senior Researcher Anthony Yung to discuss the contents of the weekly art supplement. Lai shares her thoughts and experiences behind the editorial processes of inviting artists and collaborating with them on each issue, Pak speaks about his creative processes and reflections on using the newspaper column as a medium, and Yung responds as a long-term reader of Sunday Mingpao.
As a longstanding anchor of mainstream media, newspapers are regarded as a credible source and was once the most popular and widespread means of disseminating information. The medium of the newspaper relates to one’s everyday life, allowing its content to reach a wider audience. How does the editor design each issue? How are artists’ practices changed through the medium of the newspaper? How do individual artworks connect with society? Can newspapers broaden the public for contemporary art?
Speakers
Helen Lai (Sunday Mingpao editor)
Tozer Pak Sheung Chuen (Artist and Sunday Mingpao columnist)
Anthony Yung (AAA Senior Researcher and Sunday Mingpao reader)
The Interpretation and Display of Hong Kong Culture
Thu, 12 Dec 2024
6:30–8pm
The second talk centres on the Siu King Chung Archive to discuss how the ordinary has been interpreted and observed. Siu’s own collecting practice is informed by his interest and understanding of museology, where museology is used as a method to consider the collection and display of the “uncollectible.” Siu elaborates on several materials in his personal archive and the logic and reasoning behind their collection. Further, Siu engages in a dialogue with cultural producer Bobo Choy, independent curator Vivian Ting, and Deputy Director of CUHK Art Museum Raymond Tang to exchange perspectives on archival practice and display.
As an educator, scholar, curator, and artist, Siu’s archive is as diverse as his identities and research interests. His collection charts Hong Kong art from the 1980s to the 2000s, spanning exhibition histories, self-organised art practices, educational practices, and cultural policy. The archive also portrays his personal, creative, and curatorial vision, particularly his emphasis on visual culture, underrepresented histories, and community engagement. The Siu King Chung Archive and his ideas on display and reception reflect his observations of this city, offering a profound understanding of Hong Kong’s artistic and cultural landscape.
