The AAA is pleased to present an 8-artist talk, as a program of the Hong Kong International Artists' Workshop 2008: 4X4, an exchange programme taking place in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong, organized by AiR*. The program invites 4 overseas artists to Hong Kong to work and interact with 4 local artists through workshops in March. The talk will be not only a chance for the public to learn about their work but also a good opportunity for the artists to interact and communicate with one another.

Visiting artists:
Shahram Entekhabi, born in Iran, now resides in Berlin, Germany. An artist and architect, Shahram’s practice reveals the power structure in urban space. He chooses to highlight marginalized individuals through a variety of performative practices like architecture, installation and digital media.

Abhinandita Mathur, based in both Bombay and Delhi, India, is a photographer and researcher who’s works have a strong anthropological approach and demonstrate a humane concern. Her works raise the voice of the oppressed, such as sex workers, women and children through her research and display.

Bundith Phunsombatlert, from Bangkok, Thailand, works with diverse media from hand-made print-makings and multiple sculptures to interactive installations. His work questions social, economic, and political situations in Thailand under globalization.

Michael Townsend, from New York City, USA, explores the medium of tape as a medium of art and community empowerment. The love of redefining and playing with the boundaries between public and private space has resulted in sculpture installations in forgotten spaces. He desires to make art accessible and participatory.

Participating Hong Kong artists:
Cheng Yee-man (Gum) + Clara Cheung is an artist duo who work with a wide range of mediums. They are members of an art group Project226 and founders of C & G Artpartment.

Law Man-lok is a conceptual artist. His works emphasize on the synergy of imagination and criticality. Law used to begin with the matters around to make a piece, and recently he showed his concern on the dominant of commercialization in city development.

Angela Su received a degree in bio-chemistry in Canada before pursing visual arts. By borrowing from various scientific disciplines such as human biology, geography and entology, her work combines the precision of scientific sketches with a mythical sense of aesthetic.

Tse Pak-chai is a photographer, and between a social activist and an observer of social movements. He has documented widely protests in Hong Kong. His work was included in various publications related to urban regeneration and right to abode in Hong Kong. He co-founded the curatorial collective Community Museum Project in 2002.

The Hong Kong International Artists' Workshop 2008: 4X4 is co-presented by The AiR Association Limited, Kowloon Technical School and Triangle Arts Trust with the support of Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, Poon Sau Kuen, Asian Cultural Council, Asia New Zealand Foundation and Goethe-Institut Hong Kong.

Hong Kong International Artists' Workshop 2008: 4X4 continues the spirit of Re:Wanchai, AiR's pilot programme in 2005, as both a cultural exchange project as well as an experiment in community development. The Workshop is part of a worldwide network of workshops developed by Triangle Arts Trust.
