Video documentation | Introducing the Mrinalini Mukherjee Archive

In this talk, Asia Art Archive Researcher Noopur Desai introduces the archive of Mrinalini Mukherjee (1949–2015). Comprising over 1,800 records, the Mrinalini Mukherjee Archive documents the career of one of the most prominent modernist sculptors from India, who, beginning in the 1970s, challenged existing norms of sculptural practice through the use of unconventional materials.

Desai’s presentation considers photo-documentation as part of Mukherjee’s art practice, and focuses on three crucial strands of the collection: photo-documentation of Mukherjee’s art-making process that reflects her innovative ways of engaging with materials and exhibition display; photographs of art historical and cultural sites that constitute artistic research of the artist; and Mukherjee’s engagement with artists, curators, and art infrastructures that brings out interconnected art histories.

The presentation is followed by a Q&A.
