Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba: Talk & Screening

Asia Art Archive is pleased to present a screening and talk by Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba, Japanese Vietnamese artist renowned for his large-scale video projects exploring themes of Vietnamese heritage and Asian cultural identity.

The screening will present two films: Memorial Project, Nha Trang, Vietnam: Towards the Complex - For the Courageous, the Curious, and the Cowards (2001), in which the underwater settings refer to Vietnam's relationship to water with its long coastline and river basins and to the country's folklore, and his latest film The Ground, the Root, and the Air: The Passing of the Bodhi Tree, which attempts to explore the pattern of the shifting values of youth in Laos.

 

Born in Tokyo in 1968, Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba currently lives in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He earned an M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art after receiving his B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.  In recent years, he has had solo exhibitions at venues including: Museum of Art Lucerne, Manchester Art Gallery, Mori Art Museum in Tokyo and The House of World Cultures in Berlin. His work has been included in international biennials, including the Guangzhou Triennial, the Venice Biennale, the Istanbul Biennial, the Sydney Biennial and the Yokohama Triennale. His works can be found in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum (New York), the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Queensland Art Gallery.
