'Korea, Be Inspired'

As one of the most exciting centres in Asia, Korea is booming. In twenty years – a relatively short period of time – the country has managed to develop a robust infrastructure that supports the ecology of its art world. Museums, schools, galleries, collectors, alternative spaces, artists, art teachers, funding, and even a black market have emerged to support different aspects of the contemporary art scene.

While the field continues its accelerated development, the attention it receives from outside Korea, particularly that of the international media, is often focused on concerns that differ from those of the local population. This panel will consider the case of Seoul; addressing how its development as a cosmopolitan city in the last decade has shaped internal and external perceptions of the city and how these perceptions affect Korean cultural production.
