Grube’s research project, “Image and Phenomena: The Development of Video Art in China, 1988 to 1998,” focuses on Image and Phenomena, a video art exhibition curated by Wu Meichun and Qiu Zhijie in 1996 at China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. The exhibition included the work of fifteen artists and demonstrated the diverse formal applications of analog and digital video in contemporary artistic practice. Through associated publications and an academic symposium, Image and Phenomena also sought to establish a theoretical and historical foundation for the continued development of video art in China.

This research situates Image and Phenomena within a history of exhibition-making that activated public space and institutional sites for the promotion and legitimisation of alternative artistic practices in China, and seek to understand the exhibition as the conclusion of a decade of artistic experimentation and theoretical inquiry.

Grube presents her findings in her AAA talk "Image and Phenomena: The Development of Video Art in China, 1988-1998" and her final paper can be found here.
