Liu Nanxi’s research project, “The Art of Being Present: Live Performance in China During the 1990s,” examines performance art festivals in China, with the aim of building a substantial collection of documentation and to trace the initial stages of these art festivals upon their germination in China. During the 1990s, performance art in Beijing East Village rose to prominence, while performance artists gathered and performed in public spaces in Chengdu. Artists started to curate and organise performance art events in the late nineties. Since 2000, festivals have become important sites for performance art. This project looks at the history of Chinese performance art festivals in context through critical discussions about the festival format itself.

Liu Nanxi received her MA in Cultural Management at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She contributes to Art World magazine and Artforum. Liu was an organiser and an artist for the 2015 Performance Art International Exchange Project.
