This year, Travelling Teaching Labs brings teachers to Hangzhou, a city brimming with both the vibrancy of contemporary art and a rich legacy of arts and culture. For centuries, literati have drawn inspiration from Hangzhou as the cradle of classic literature, while also serving as an important site for contemporary art experimentation and innovation today. In this city, art spaces coexist and intersect with cultural landmarks; tradition and contemporaneity dialogue with one another through Hangzhou’s architecture, cultural landscape, and art districts.
This event takes participants to China Academy of Art—a leading institution of contemporary art in China—to converse with students and teachers in different departments. Participants review their learning outcomes and teaching practices to explore innovative methods in art practice and education. Participants also visit BY ART MATTERS and its OōEli architectural space, art library, and residency programmes, to gain insight into the role art institutions play in Hangzhou’s contemporary art and creative scene. We will also pay a visit to independent art spaces through a different lens.
This event presents a unique opportunity to engage Hangzhou’s art and cultural ecosystem first-hand through meaningful knowledge exchange with local art educators on new possibilities for innovation. Last year, AAA organised the first edition of Travelling Teaching Labs in Macau. This series builds a learning community for teachers to brainstorm methods for bringing contemporary art into classrooms and inspire new possibilities in art education.
This programme is designed for secondary school teachers. We welcome visual arts teachers or those interested in cross-disciplinary collaboration with the arts to apply.
