Photologue | Touring the South: In Search of Alternatives

May is the month when many art academies in China stage their thesis exhibitions for their graduating classes in all departments. My trip to the China Academy of Fine Art to attend the thesis exhibition of their New Media Department marked the beginning of a search for "alternatives," that is art found outside the gallery and museum spaces. Throughout my travels I was constantly reminded of the emergence of young artist collectives, alternative art spaces, and art being exhibited beyond institutional settings which is setting a trend and a new page in the history of contemporary Chinese art. This trip has not only been visually invigorating and refreshing, but has also offered a glimmer of hope from the determination and creative energy of young artists and graduates. Spring was, indeed, in the air.
