Asia Art Archive welcomes artist-educator Jaime Ruíz Martínez to our Residency Programme.

During his residency, Ruíz will conduct research on the relationship between art and education in Asia through various encounters, with the goal of gaining insight into their approximations, contextual situations, motivations, and approaches. These encounters will serve as the foundation for a series of diagrams to generate stories, cartographic traces, and relationships aimed at intertwining practices of socially engaged art in Latin America with Asia.

In May 2023, Ruíz will begin by exploring AAA’s digitised archival collections online; and then, from 1 to 18 June 2023, he will work onsite at AAA in Hong Kong, where he will conduct the talk Rooted Networks: Field Notes from Oaxaca and participate in an Art Education Network Roundtable with art education and community practitioners in the city. A series of site visits and meetings during his stay in Hong Kong will further his research.

Jaime Ruíz Martínez is an artist-educator with training in design, visual art, and contemporary thought. His interests revolve around the intersections between different binary paradigms, such as rural-urban, indigenous-colonial, and communal-capitalist, among others, which he explores through drawing, diagramming, and expanded practices with communities. He is the co-founder of the Lugar Común neighbourhood initiative (2012–present) in Oaxaca, which explores rural community self-organisation and citizen participation in urban life alongside other artists and neighbours. Since 2019, he has led the Education Department at Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City.

This residency is part of AAA’s Learning and Participation Programme, generously supported by the S. H. Ho Foundation Limited.
