The 2019 Teaching Labs series, part of AAA’s teacher professional development programme, focuses on performance art.

How can contemporary art inspire us to rethink possibilities of art and education in the twenty-first century? Unfolding Possibilities: The “Art Life” of Frog King looks at the life of Kwok Mangho Frog King—considered the first performance artist in Hong Kong—and his diverse artistic practices, amongst them live art. His interpretation of “happenings” (客賓臨) in his performances reflects the importance of collaborative and participatory approaches, and also his belief that “art is life and life is art.” Frog King’s work emphasises experimentation and challenging boundaries—reflected not only in his use of different art forms, such as ink painting and calligraphy, but also in his teaching methods, which often include impromptu classroom activities.

Talk | 2 Mar 2019, 11am–1pm

The talk invites Frog King and his student Kith Tsang Tak Ping, an artist-educator himself, to engage in dialogue. The speakers will discuss Frog King’s artistic practice, education concepts and teaching methods, as well as the artist’s education and influences. Participants will also be introduced to the Kwok Mangho Frog King Archive.

Teachers’ Learning Community

In the Teachers’ Learning Community, participating teachers will brainstorm ideas on using contemporary art materials in the classroom, design teaching plans, and try out new ideas in their schools. These proposals will be shared in order to encourage a peer-support learning community.

Teachers who signed up for the Teachers’ Learning Community are required to attend both the workshop and sharing session. For the top three teaching proposals, Kith will offer an in-school sharing session for the teachers’ classes. Two observer quotas, which allow teachers from other schools to observe Kith’s sharing, will also be offered to selected teachers.

Implementation Workshop | 2 Mar 2019, 2–5pm

In this workshop, Kith will respond to Frog King’s practices as highlighted in the talk and conduct hands-on sessions with teachers to explore ways to introduce performance art into a secondary school setting. Kith will also share his own experiences of running the first performance art class in a secondary school in Hong Kong. A wider range of materials related to performance art in Hong Kong from AAA’s Collection will be introduced to teachers.
