Born in 1934 in Guangdong, in southern China, Kwan moved to Hong Kong in 1949. He studied art and design at the Department of Extra-mural Studies of Hong Kong University in 1972, and moved to the United States and obtained a BFA degree from the Columbus College of Art and Design in 1976, and a MFA degree from Syracuse University in 1978. He received awards from the Ford Foundation for excellent works (1978) and National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship for artists (1995/96) in the U.S., and exhibited in various group shows in the U.S. and Hong Kong. Since moving back to Hong Kong in 1997, he taught at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Arts School and Chinese University, and organised solo exhibitions of young artists in his own studio during the annual Fotanian Open Studio in last few years.

This file includes mainly the artist's writings, essays from various publications, photocopies of artworks and photographs, which are collected on the occasion of 'In Memory of Gerry Kwan,' an exhibition held shortly after the artist passed away in 2008. Leaflets, invitations and other ephemeral material are also found in this file.
