This book is a collection of essays by Noi Sawaragi first published as a monthly column in Bijutsu Techo art magazine from July 1996 to June 1997.  The author tries to revisit and reconstruct art history in the post-war Japan by carefully reviewing each of its three essential elements, namely, 'Japan', 'Modern', and 'Art'. Citing works by earlier art critics Ichiro Hariu, Shigeo Chiba and Atsushi Miyakawa, the author questions whether there is such thing as Japanese modern art history. With bibliography and index.
