Sisters with 'Two Girls'

This work is from the Re-take of Amrita series.

Excerpt from Vivan Sundaram , Vivan Sundaram: Re-take of Amrita, Tulika Books, New Delhi, 2001:

'Recent interpretations of Amrita Sher-Gil’s paintings foreground her interest in female sexuality. In Two Girls, done in Budapest in 1939, the female is painted distinctly from a woman’s perspective. It presents sisterhood, bonding, and the perennially sought 'marriage' of east and west. In my work, the young girls in the painting, their frontality and distant look, are doubled by the difference between the two sisters. I bring together Amrita and Indira from different locations in the mid-30s to Shimla; their gazes always diverge.'
