'In 1996, the Taipei Annual Arts Competition became the Taipei Prize. Nine categories of competition were combined into two categories: the "plastic arts" and the "applied arts". To clarify the categories of competition, submissions were invited for the "art" category and the "design" category in 1999. In 2001, it was renamed the Taipei Arts Award in keeping with the culture-oriented policy of Taipei and the idea of setting up a series of cultural affairs. In addition, the categories of competition were abolished to accommodate the multifarious forms of expression of contemporary art.' (excerpt from preface by the director Huang Tsai-lang)
