Catalogue of joint exhibition held at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai in 2000. With essay by Andrew L. Cohen and artist biographies.

'This exhibition spans several decades, moving from M.F. Husain (b.1915), the oldest and probably one of the best known internationally of the artists represented here, to the youthful and talented Jitish Kallat, born in 1974. One grew up with rock music and the advent of cable TV, the other in almost medieval rural austerity. The struggles of the older generation, those born before independence (1947), who have lived through the ferocity of partition and communal rancor, the rips and tears of India's 20th century, are different from the younger generation. While they too have known national vexations and personal angst, the younger artists luxuriate in a thriving commercial art market that came into existence only a few years ago, thanks in large part to the struggles of the earlier generation. The point is that regardless of age they all bring unique perceptions of India and the world to their art. To the extent that they can be said to be 'at home in the world', 'home' is the hybrid India created by the clash of identities in the interstitial spaces of the artists' fluid and mobile lives.' - Andrew L. Cohen
