A profile of Japanese photographer Naito Masatoshi. In 1961, he graduated from Waseda University with a degree in applied chemistry. He photographed the mummified remains of sokushinbutsu (self-starved monks) at Dewasanzan in Yamagata prefecture which started his career as an ethnologist. He then trained as a yamabushi itinerant priest. He published collections over the years that examined popular folk beliefs. Around 1992, Naito photographed sacred mountains for his series Kamigami no ikai (The other world of the gods), which an audience might interpret as "an attempt to make landscape photographs of places we might call meeting points between mankind and the gods."
