Ye Shufang is part of a new generation of Singaporean contemporary artists. She is aware of both Western and traditional Asian art histories. It is within these contexts that her explorations begin. Ye sets herself apart from many of her contemporaries by virtue of her public questioning of the forms of her art. At each of her exhibitions she invites the viewer to particpate in her search. Her work is not a conclusion but rather another step in the cycle of understanding.
In her previous exhibitions, she had made use of 6000 litres of agar-agar to create a work which allowed viewers to interact with. The present catalogue documents Ye's solo exhibition at the Earl Lu Gallery in 2000 in which the artist draws with chocolate. Essays on Ye's art as well as a biography are included here.
