In the globalised era cosmopolitans in East Asia are becoming highly developed but are at the same time suffering from collective anxiety and alienation as a result of capitalism. This book, based on researches on Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Taipei, charts the complicity of power relations prevalent in these cosmopolitan cities and asks how these peoples can imagine their identities politics. Combining methodologies of cultural studies, narratology, visual studies, and cultural theory, this book examines urban people's possibilities of interpretation, discussion, and action in various problematics including globalised space, cultural rootedness, nostalgia, and inter-city linkages.
