'Can the novel be considered a medium in its own right within the visual arts? There are many artists who have written novels, but the Artist Novel is something else. It is a contemporary phenomenon in which visual artists employ their novels in their projects, as they would employ installation, performance, or video. Introducing into the visual arts traits that are particular to narrative literature implies the accentuation of some features over others, such as narration, fiction, identification, the reader's protracted engagement, and distribution in public space. For artists, the creation of a novel doesn't differ from any other artwork; both processes, writing and art-making, feed each other as they evolve within the same body of works. Thanks to the contributions of a select group of artists, writers, curators, and scholars, Artist Novels strives to demonstrate that literature, when treated by visual artists, can take place well beyond the space of the book.' - excerpted from back cover.
