This book documents an impromptu, four-day exhibition put together by over 40 artists and collectives in September 2009, staged in a converted factory across from an Ikea warehouse in the far western suburbs of Shanghai. The project explores the idea of 'bourgeoisifying' the proletariat (working class), favoured during the Cultural Revolution led by Mao Zedong. The artists' responses to 11 questions including 'State the class background of the last three generations of your family' and 'Summarise your experience of growing up' are compiled in this book, accompanied by images and notes on the vast array of exhibited works. Artist biographies are included.
