This publication accompanies 'Erasure', Dinh Q. Lê's solo exhibition at Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation, Paddington, Australia from July to September 2011. Erasure, a newly commissioned work, draws on recent debates in Australia concerning refugees and asylum seekers, in light of the Christmas Island boat tragedy in December 2010. It also relates to the artist's personal experience as a young refugee fleeing from Vietnam by boat. The sculptural and video installation combines a floor-to-ceiling moving image of a burning 18th century ship with thousands of old family photographs scattered across the gallery floor among boat fragments and other debris. As part of the work, the photographs, which were purchased from antique stores in Ho Chi Minh City, are gradually removed, scanned, catalogued and uploaded to a dedicated website (erasurearchive.net) to form an online archive.
Includes interview with the artist by Dolla S. Merrillees and essay by Zoe Butt. With selected biography and bibliography of the artist.
