From 19-22 February 2004 the Asia Research Institute and the History Department of the National University of Singapore convened a major international conference on recent approaches to modern and contemporary Asian art, 'Our Modernities: Positioning Asian Art Now', with John Clark as chair of convenors. This volume presents a selection of thirteen substantially revised papers from the twenty-six that were originally presented at the conference. The rationale for the selection was a focus on certain problems of art practice and reception whilst retaining a diversity of regional and methodological approaches.
