Trained in traditional Chinese ink painting under the Lingnan master Zhao Shao’ang, Frank Tam moved to Canada in the early 1970s when he began to feel dissatisfied with the Chinese media and consciously questioned Eastern and Western traditions. The works included in this exhibition catalogue, covering mixed media and traditional Chinese ink paintings, can be viewed as a turning point in Frank Tam’s career. By making use of both Western and Chinese forms and materials, Tam has integrated the aesthetics of these cultures, thereby creating his personal visual language. This catalogue also includes a biography of the artist.
