This catalogue features the works of three Japanese artists chosen for the Venice Biennale 1988. Even though their mode of expression is very different from one another, their works are mainly made out of wood and greatly influenced by the spirit of Enku, a seventeenth-century itinerant Buddhist priest in Japan.

Artists' statements and biographies are also included in this catalogue.
