This catalogue is published in conjunction with the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative's first phase focusing on contemporary art from South and Southeast Asia. The Initiative, launched by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and UBS in 2012, encompasses curatorial residencies, international touring exhibitions, audience-driven education programmes, and acquisitions for the Guggenheim's permanent collection.

June Yap worked as Guggenheim UBS Map Curator, South and Southeast Asia, to identify artworks for acquisition and to develop the inaugural exhibition of the Initiative, 'No Country: Contemporary Art for South and Southeast Asia'. Presenting a shifting spectrum of creative practices, the survey includes 30 works by 27 artists and collectives from Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Rather than viewing the region as discrete nation-states of contemporary formulation, it proposes an understanding based on networks of intellectual exchange and mutual influence, and considers the impacts of ethno-nationalism, colonisation, and globalisation on national identity. Following its presentation at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the exhibition travelled to Asia Society Hong Kong Center and NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore.

Includes artists' biographies. Chinese translation provided in the back of the catalogue.
