During the period 1993 to 2002, contemporary Chinese artist Huang Yan began to do rubbing off walls and doorplates of buildings that were going to be pulled down as a result of the modernisation process undergoing in many Chinese cities including Changchun, Beijing, Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai, Jilin, Shenyang, Xian, Tianjin, Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, Dali and Guangzhou. Huang believes that in this way, the history, and the relationship between the building and the people who had once lived there can be kept. An artist biography is included.
