Context

Founded in 2011, Art Citizens is a group of Hong Kong art practitioners whose purpose is to defend the city's freedom of speech and social concerns through art. According to Art Citizens' manifesto, they 'carry out [their] defense through creations, actions, and discussions to invoke more and more people to take the current situation in mainland China and Hong Kong into concern, to fight against all kinds of ambiguous censorship towards artistic practice, and to develop different forms of expressions creatively.' Art Citizens was formed in opposition to Ai Wei Wei's detainment.
