Catalogue of exhibition held at Middlesbrough Art Gallery in Middlesbrough, United Kingdom, followed by a nationwide tour. The exhibition is a 'short but intense history of women artists at work in modern India' from the 1930s to the present. It features nine women artists, primarily painters, who use a variety of media to examine issues that affect contemporary art in India such as politics, the modern metropolis, myth, academicism, violence and female subjectivity.

Foreword by Alison Lloyd. With introduction by Geeta Kapur and notes on each artist's work by Kamala Kapoor and Sutapa Biswas. List of works and artist biographies are provided.
