From the blurb, 'Published on the occasion of a major exhibition opening at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, Inside the Visible presents a provocative reading of artwork by over thirty women artists of vastly different backgrounds and experiences. The work of important yet previously "invisible" figures is highlighted alongside that of established artists to create a re-theorised interpretation of the art of this century. Structured in terms of recurrent historical cycles, Inside the Visible focuses on three periods (the 1930s-40s, the 1960s-70s, and the 1990s) that anticipated waves of political repression, nationalism, and xenophobia, and in which artistic practice was often redefined. Illustrated essays document each artist in the exhibition. In addition, five general essays trace connections among the artists, taking up such issues as why artistic recognition eluded certain artists and why their work is only becoming legible today. They also address overlapping themes such as gender intersected with racial class, ethnic, sexual, and regional modalities of identity, as constituted in different historical contexts.'
