This PhD thesis is submitted by Li-Hsin Kuo to the Department of Media and Communications of Goldsmiths College - University of London.

'This thesis analyses the meaning of social documentary photography produced in Taiwan in the second half of the 1980s and considers how it engages with relevant issues from the Western documentary tradition. The research aims to contextualise a range of work - from the images in the monthly magazine Ren Jian and the photographic monograph Give Taiwan a Chance to the work of leading Taiwanese photographers such as Ruan Yi-zhong, Wang Xin and Guan Xiao-rong - in the specific political and cultural conditions of Taiwanese society at that time and to reassess the practicability of adopting Western theories in evaluating these local texts.' - extracted from the abstract.
