'As a project created to be exhibited in three different locations (New Delhi, Milan and Sydney), Jitish Kallat's Richshawpolis is a portrait of the artist's home town of Bombay (Mumbai) replete with details lovingly collected, a necesssary sense of humor and a palpable degree of frustration. The artist himself stands at the center of this urban maelstrom, attempting to process visual and sensorial overloads into works of art that might stand apart from the chaos while illuminating something of its conundrums. Kallat ebbs and flow with the parameters, unleashing the potential of his art objects (photographs become installations while paintings flirt with sculptures, figuration is in bed with abstraction, Realism haunts Formalism) while restraining his most bombastic urges. Compromise, then, is the paradigmatic ideal, both logical and intuitive, never without anxiety and certainly always achieved with pleasure.' - extracted from foreword by Peter Nagy.
