This material was published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same title. Kyushu has produced a lot of important artists who were central to Japan’s art scenes since western style oil paintings were introduced to Japan. Their accomplishments are distinctive in different types of art. This exhibition was organized to reexamine their achievement from four points of view: ‘modern western style paintings,’ ‘avant-garde art,’ ‘contemporary art’ and ‘art in Kumamoto.’
There are essays by Yukito TANAKA and Ichiro HARIU available in Japanese. Brief description of the artist's biogaphical information and their body of work accompany images of their works. A bibliography, a museum guide in Kyushu, and a list of works are available at the end.
