This was the second time Taiwan had its own pavilion at the Venice Biennale, considered by many to be the world’s foremost art event. Five artists were selected in 1997 to represent Taiwan, with work ranging from acrylic painting to digital prints, exhibiting an abundant variety of expression, representative of contemporary Taiwanese art practice. These artists could be seen as the first generation finally allowed to speak freely of ‘Taiwan-ness’, and while their media may differ, all are concerned with identity and the uniqueness of Taiwan. This catalogue includes two essays by local scholars/curators, and brief biographies of the participating artists. With preface by Lin Munlee (Director of Taipei Fine Arts Museum) and Paolo De Grandis (Assistant commissioner of the exhibition). Bibliography is included.
