Lee Ufan was born in Kyungsang Namdo, Korea in 1936. He belonged to the last generation of Koreans to receive a traditional Confucian education. After coming to Japan in 1956 and studying philosophy at a Japanese University, he began making and showing art in Japan. He is known for his leading role among the group of young artists known as the Mono-ha. These artists rejected the traditional notions of representation, and in particular of the principle that art expresses the artist's personal experience. They sought instead to explore the relationships of materials and perceptions. The Mono-ha school became Japan's first contemporary art movement to gain international recognition.

This exhibition focuses on Lee's recent work from the 1990s through the present, introducing a total of 36 examples of painting and sculpture. This is the first retrospective exhibition of Lee's work in Japan in the last twelve years and the first large-scale solo exhibition of his work to be held in Japan since the 1990s. The present catalogue includes chronology of the artist and selected bibliography.
