The works of Liu Hongwei belong to the stream of surrealism; they project a world of imagination and fantasy. Themes such as playing, disasters and handicaps appear frequently, and influences from the Western masters such as Brugel, Balthus and Chagall can easily be traced. Beyond their surreal surface, the Chinese critic Yin Shuangxi has pointed out in his essay that by means of relative ruralisation, the works of Liu Hongwei reflect the damage that man has done to nature in the process of urbanization and the erosion of the inner world of human being. This publication is the catalogue for Liu Hongwei’s solo exhibition at Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery (Hong Kong). A biography of the artist is included.
