A catalogue of Chinese oil painter Liu Ye's solo exhibition at Chinese Contemporary in London in 2001. His subjects range from musicians and ballerinas to religious figures and movie stars, and to ordinary people and people who he knows personally.
Liu Ye's figures always stand out from the single-coloured background, and he has endowed them with a sense of coolness and humour. An interpretation of Liu Ye's painting style can be found in Julia Colman's essay in which she mentions about the influence of the art of Vermeer and Mondrian and the artist's own experience in contemporary China. Artist biography is included.
