This catalogue of Ma Kelu’s recent works features mainly paintings from the ‘Ba Da’ series. Taking inspirations from the ink paintings of the early Qing Chinese artist, Ma kept the themes of landscape, fish and orchids, but rendered them in oil. Francesca Dal Lago writes, ‘Since he (Ma Kelu) doesn’t want to be mistaken for either just another Western abstract painter or the simple transmitter of Chinese tradition, he runs the very serious risk of being misunderstood by both worlds. It’s hard, if not impossible, to follow him down this very tortuous route: by disguising himself as a Chinese artist to the West and using Western techniques to reproduce Chinese subjects he is establishing a really unique but certainly very desolate space.’
Brief biography of the artist is included.
