Chandramohan Srimantula, also known as Chandra Mohan, was a postgraduate final year student at Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU), Baroda, when his paintings in a student exhibition were targeted by the Vadodara-based Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Niraj Jain as being obscene. Chandramohan was arrested and detained in jail under three charges: offending religious sentiments intentionally, being a threat to national integration and harmony, and having outrageous religious beliefs. Other artists have been vocal in their protest of his arrest. Art critic Ranjit Hoskote also expressed his support for Chandramohan. Tushar Joag, Mortimer Chatterjee, Tara Lal, Vinod Shetty, Kekoo Gandy and Jehangir Sabavala are other figures in the Mumbai art world who oppose the arrest.
Gathered in an accompanying column, No Difference Between Us and the Taliban, are quotes by members of Vadodara's art and academic community.
